Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, six weeks of penitence and fasting before Easter.
Many Christians attend special Ash Wednesday church services, at which churchgoers receive ash on their foreheads. Ash Wednesday derives its name from this practice, in which the placement of ashes is accompanied by the words, "Repent, and believe in the Gospel" or "Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return." The ashes are prepared by burning palm leaves from the previous year's Palm Sunday celebrations.

Bermondsey, St Mary Magdalen

All are welcome at St Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey. Our Sunday Services are at 10.30am with Holy Communion each week
After a short welcome and time of singing, children leave the main service (on alternate weeks) to take part in children’s’ groups in rooms around the church. These groups use simple Bible based materials to help children learn about God and discover Jesus amongst other children of a similar age. Each week we have Holy Communion.

We have prayers and Bible Study in the week to learn more about the Christian faith.
