My kingdom is not from this world. ….Pilate asked him, ‘So you are a king?’ Jesus answered, ‘You say that I am a king. For this I was born, and for this I came into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who belongs to the truth listens to my voice.’ John 18 : 36 - 37Readings this week Daniel 7 : 9 – 10, 13 - 14; Revelation 1 : 4b - 8; John 18 : 33 - 37Thought for this weekAs Roman Governor, Pontius Pilate was familiar with political survival. With manipulation, balancing interests, and keeping quiet so as to not attract the attention of Rome.Yet in his encounter with Jesus Pilate meets with an authority and a certainty he has not known before. It is Pilate who is challenged, searching for answers, being subtly and deeply questioned by Jesus. The episode ends with Pilate asking Jesus, ‘What is truth?’. Yet he has Truth standing before him. Jesus’ Kingship is not of this world, and different to all those who hold power in this world, all those who claim authority, all those who assert certainty other than that of the Lord’s power and love.Jesus goes on challenging our human constructions and intentions just as He has challenged every kingdom over the past 2,000 years. This is the King who serves, who sacrificed His life for us, who goes beyond and ahead of us in every situation, who is alive and active in our world. Jesus is the true King, The King – Shepherd, the King of grace and love. Rev PaulPrayer for this weekEternal Father, whose Son Jesus Christ ascended to the throne of heaven that he might rule over all things as Lord and King: keep the Church in the unity of the Spirit and in the bond of peace, and bring the whole created order to worship at his feet; who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenGod the Father, help us to hear the call of Christ the King and to follow in his service, whose kingdom has no end; for he reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, one glory. AmenPeople to pray forFor the elderly who cannot heat their homesFor those without shelterFor those working for peace

Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10 : 24 - 25Readings this week Daniel 12 : 1 - 3; Hebrews 10 : 11 – 14, 19 - 25; Mark 13 : 1 -- 8Thought for this weekSeveral days ago Bishop Graham wrote: ‘I have been utterly appalled by the contents of the Makin Review into the crimes of John Smyth and the response of those who knew about them.’ I have read much of the review and one very clear view is reiterated time and again : Safeguarding is the responsibility of us all.So many people had the opportunity to report the John Smyth to the relevant authorities - some failed to do so at all; others did something but failed to ensure that action was taken. Our New Testament reading urges us—the people of God, to live in the light and expose the darkness. Any knowledge we have of dark deeds that are abusing people must come into the light—be exposed. Safeguarding is my responsibility. It is your responsibility. Much progress has been made in the Church of England in recent years to improve our safeguarding practice but we still have a long way to go. Please pray for our diocesan safeguarding team as well as our Parish Safeguarding Officer. And more importantly, hold in your prayers those who have suffered this appalling abuse and for whom this Review will have evoked painful memories. Stella NoonsPrayer for this weekHeavenly Father, whose blessed Son was revealed to destroy the works of the devil and to make us the children of God and heirs of eternal life: grant that we, having this hope, may purify ourselves even as he is pure; that when he shall appear in power and great glory we may be made like him in his eternal and glorious kingdom; where he is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenHeavenly Lord, you long for the world’s salvation: stir us from apathy, restrain us from excess and revive in us new hope that all creation will one day be healed in Jesus Christ our Lord. AmenPeople to pray forAll those involved in SafeguardingOur own Safeguarding Officer and Safeguarding team at the DioceseThose who have suffered from abuse of various kinds
