“There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light”. John 1 : 6 - 8Readings this week : Isaiah 61; 1 Thessalonians 5 : 16 - 24 ; John 1 : 6 – 8, 19 – 28Thought for this weekJohn the Baptist breaks into these days before Christmas with his powerful message of repentance and faith. He has spent years in the wilderness preparing for his ministry. He lives a life of austerity and self denial, and lives out his message of turning back to the Lord. His faith in the Lord, and particularly in who Jesus is, is plain to see. His message is openly and dramatically clear. As we come close to the celebration of Christmas, John’s message comes as a reminder to the true meaning of the coming of Jesus. We are called to live in Jesus’ grace, love and hope. As we look to Jesus’ Second Coming we are called to remember these are awesome events that define our lives. As we prepare for Christmas, John’s message reminds us how we are called to witness to Jesus. We are called to live lives of faith. To believe and know that He is The Way, the Truth and the Life, come into our lives and into our world. Singing the carols. Showing kindness. Praying for our neighbours. Celebrating our faith. Joining with the excitement of the angels and shepherds. Giving to others, all speak of the wonder of this time. That Jesus, our Saviour and King, has come to us. Good News indeed Rev PaulPrayers this weekO Lord Jesus Christ, who at your first coming sent your messenger to prepare your way before you:grant that the ministers and stewards of your mysteries may likewise so prepare and make ready your way by turning the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just, that at your second coming to judge the world we may be found an acceptable people in your sight;for you are alive and reign with the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. AmenGod for whom we watch and wait, you sent John the Baptist to prepare the way of your Son: give us courage to speak the truth, to hunger for justice, and to suffer for the cause of right, with Jesus Christ our Lord. AmenPeople to pray for :For all those witnessing to Jesus today.

“I will send my messenger ahead of you, who will prepare your way”— “a voice of one calling in the wilderness, ‘Prepare the way for the Lord, make straight paths for him. Mark 1 : 2 - 3Readings this week : Isaiah 40 : 1 - 11, 2 Peter 3 : 8 – 15a, Mark 1 : 1 – 8Thought for this weekNo doubt your preparations are well under way this year. Have you braved the shops? Maybe you have made plans for the celebration ? Today we think about the prophets. How they told of the promise of Jesus to come, looking ahead to His coming.Today more than ever the prophets’ message is about the path we have made for ourselves, It is hard to look at the news these days. It is hard to think about the state of the world and those who suffer. What have we come to?Yet Jesus was born into all of this, because He loves us. Advent shows us the deeper things are of huge importance today. The call of John in the wilderness to be revived. To expect Jesus in our daily lives. To look hopefully for His coming now and in the future. The prophets were raised by the Father to point us back to the Lord’s ways. His heart for the world. We are called to hear the prophets’ cry. To look to the greater things. To know this world is not all that there is. Today we light candles for peace. Peace that comes in our lives, through us, often in small ways. Can we be makers of God’s peace today? Rev Paul People to pray for :For those seeking the Lord’s peace at this timeFor our churches preparing for the celebration of ChristmasPrayers this week“Prepare the way of the Lord!Make a straight road for him!” Matthew 3:3Holy and loving God, we have dwelt in darkness and preferred it to the light;we have been proud of our accomplishments and despaired over our shortcomings.Smooth down the mountains of our pride, and lift up the valleys of our doubts.Open a path in the wilderness of our livesthat we might find our way to you again.Refine us and prepare us once again for life in your kingdom.Hear our prayer, O Lord.
