Thought for the weeks of 20th and 27th April 2025

But very early on Sunday morning[ the women went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. 2 They found that the stone had been rolled away from the entrance. 3 So they went in, but they didn’t find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 As they stood there puzzled, two men suddenly appeared to them, clothed in dazzling robes.   Luke 24 : 1 - 4

Readings this week Acts 10 : 34 - 43; Luke 24 : 1 - 12

Thought for this week

In Luke’s Gospel the women come to the disciples full of all they have seen and heard on Easter morning. The empty tomb. Angels, and the reminder of Jesus’ words. At first they simply do not believe them. Yet Peter goes to see for himself. He runs to the tomb, and sees the cloths that had wrapped Jesus’ body, and knows for himself it is true. Jesus is Risen and is alive!

Today seems too good to be true on the face of it. Yet on the face of it in our world it seems sin and destruction have won. It seems despair and violence have the upper hand. Yet Jesus is Risen from the dead, and He has the victory over sin and death. Jesus is alive!

Like Peter we have to see for ourselves. To read the Scriptures, ask Jesus to fill our hearts with His Resurrection joy and new life. We need to experience for ourselves all that Jesus’ resurrection means for us personally. The things that seemed unbreakable, seem to linger in our lives, through the forgiveness through the Cross and Jesus’ resurrection now we can be made new. Now we can come alive. Jesus is Risen!

So if anyone is in Christ, there is a new creation: everything old has passed away; see, everything has become new! “(2 Cor 5 : 17). Praise the Lord!

Prayers for this week

Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son
overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him: grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ, may reign with him in glory; to whom with you and the Holy Spirit be praise and honour, glory and might, now and in all eternity. Amen

God of glory, by the raising of your Son you have broken the chains of death and hell: fill your Church with faith and hope; for a new day has dawned and the way to life stands open in our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen
