Thought for the week of 16th February 2025

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
“Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.

Luke 6 : 20 - 21

Thought for this week

We have seen so many harrowing world situations lately, and so much suffering. Yet mercifully we have also seen hope, and the answer to all those prayers that have been made, and encouragement to all who have been persevering in prayer around the world.

Although each situation is unique and complex, a theme has been emerging. The plight of the powerless, the voiceless, the poor, against those who hold power, who are ‘in control’, who seek to dominate, who perpetuate war.

In our Gospel reading we have Luke’s account of the Beatitudes, where Jesus speaks of His heart for the poor, whose suffering He sees, for those who are hungry, those who are mourning. Even those who are persecuted for their faith. Jesus welcomes all those who come to Him in humility, in need, with open hands and hearts.

Yet in contrast Jesus sees those who abuse power, who cause suffering, who turn their backs on Him. They are receiving material comforts yet Jesus sees their hearts.

So we are each called to be amongst those whose lives are open to the Lord’s Holy Spirit. To come humbly to Jesus. To receive His forgiveness and new life

Prayer for this week

Almighty God, who alone can bring order to the unruly wills and passions of sinful humanity: give your people grace so to love what you command and to desire what you promise, that, among the many changes of this world, our hearts may surely there be fixed where true joys are to be found;
through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen

Eternal God, whose Son went among the crowds and brought healing with his touch: help us to show his love, in your Church as we gather together, and by our lives as they are transformed into the image of Christ our Lord. Amen
