Thought for the week of 18th February 2024

At once the Spirit sent him out into the wilderness, and he was in the wilderness forty days, being tempted by Satan. He was with the wild animals, and angels attended him.    Mark 1 : 12 – 13

Readings this week :  Genesis 9 : 8 - 17; 1 Peter 3 : 18 - end; Mark 1 : 9 - 15

Thought for this week

Some of the best things in life come as surprises, including being thanked. The best way to thank someone is when they are least expecting it, or were unaware that their contribution has been noticed or even recognised.

This Lent we are choosing a local service or facility in our community and writing messages of thanks. These will be delivered during the week, with an invitation from those we are thanking for any needs for prayer.

As we come to Lent this holds a wider challenge for us in our lives. Maybe to thank those around us who help us, or are there for us. Maybe we will receive the surprise of being thanked when we don’t expect it.

The Bible tells us offering thanks to the Lord is a powerful spiritual discipline. Gratitude opens our lives to the reality of the Lord’s love in our midst. St Paul writes,’ Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances’ (1 Thess 5 : 18) because giving thanks to the Lord reminds us of our blessings, especially when life becomes difficult.

May we be thankful people who point to the love of Jesus. As we give thanks for our blessings, those around us may discover the Lord’s blessings too.

Prayers for this week

Almighty God, whose Son Jesus Christ fasted forty days in the wilderness, and was tempted as we are, yet without sin: give us grace to discipline ourselves in obedience to your Spirit; and, as you know our weakness, so may we know your power to save; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,  Amen

Heavenly Father, your Son battled with the powers of darkness, and grew closer to you in the desert: help us to use these days to grow in wisdom and prayer that we may witness to your saving love in Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
