Thought for the week of 2nd April 2023

A very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road. The crowds that went ahead of him and those that followed shouted, “Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!” “Hosanna in the highest heaven!”         Matthew 21 : 8 - 9

This week’s reading : Matthew 21 : 1 - 11

Thought for the week

This week there have been massive crowds on the streets in Israel trying to influence the future of the nation and will those expectations be realised?

Over two thousand years ago another crowd thought they were witnessing the beginning of fulfilment of ancient prophesies; their Messiah had come at last. They were right of course but not it the way that they may have hoped.

We all have hopes and ambitions for ourselves and our families, usually that they will be happy and blessed.

It was only after the terrible crucifixion and the history changing resurrection that the Disciples and others could really understand Jesus ultimate victory.

For us, with the benefit of hindsight, also need to celebrate Palm Sunday knowing that the Hosannas and celebrations did come, despite everything and we can be joyful knowing that Jesus will reign on earth. There will be a happy ending.

Prayer for today

Almighty and everlasting God, who in your tender love towards the human race, sent your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to take upon him our flesh and to suffer death upon the cross:

grant that we may follow the example of his patience and humility, and also be made partakers of his resurrection; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, Amen.
