About Us

Welcome ! There is a lot going on in our Parish - both at St Nicholas' and our sister church St Barnabas', Pound Hill.  Our website (www.worthparish.org) gives details of what it's like at our services, and tells you a bit about events and groups you might want to try out.

From our monthly Messy Church and our regular services at 08.00 and 10am on Sundays,  to special services such as our twice-yearly Choral Evensong, Nine Lessons and Carols at Christmas, regular concert slots (Jazz, Opera, Requiem, Afternoon teas and summer fetes) there is something for everyone and wherever you turn up, we'd love to see you!

As for our tenth-century building, St Nicholas' or Worth Church, it is one of the oldest churches in continuous use and is often described as the most perfect specimen of a Saxon cruciform church in England, which is why it's always busy with weddings!  

After the Norman Conquest in A.D.1066, the church was given by William the Conqueror to his son-in-law, William de Warenne, in whose family it remained until the middle of the fourteenth century, passing via the Fitzalan family to the Earls of Abergavenny, all the while continuing to serve its spiritual charge to this part of the county.  In 1986, a fire destroyed the nineteenth-century roof of the nave, and the church two years of extensive renovation, which allowed a team of archaeologists to examine normally inaccessible parts of the structure, and to confirm the dating of the church’s original construction to 950 A.D..
