A short service of Holy Communion with Ashing. Ash Wednesday is preceded by Shrove Tuesday and marks the first day of Lent, the six weeks of penitence before Easter. The ash used on Ash Wednesday is often made from palm crosses distributed in previous years, but any suitable material may be used. Ash is imposed on the forehead in the form of a cross.
