Reviving Wadhurst’s Heritage – A Church for Today and Tomorrow

Our current heating system, some parts over 120 years old, is inefficient, costly to maintain, and environmentally unsustainable. To align with the Church of England’s Net Zero goal by 2030, we are installing an underfloor heating system powered by Air Source Heat Pumps, with a small green-gas boiler for particularly cold days. This proven system will create a more stable climate inside the church, benefiting both the building and its historic features.

Rather than disturbing the church’s archaeology by digging under the current floor, we will restore it to its original medieval level. This approach will also stabilise the north wall. The historic stone flooring will be retained, with carefully chosen new stone replacing sections under the pews.

The existing pews, which have been altered and deteriorated over time, will be replaced with oak pews designed for improved accessibility. Reopening the north entrance will enable step-free access, with a powered glass and wooden door offering a welcoming, inclusive entrance.

Other enhancements include new lighting in the chancel, a rebuilt boiler room with a green roof, and the careful repositioning of four historic iron monuments for better visibility. These improvements will honour our church’s heritage while securing its future for generations to come.
