St Mary & St Peter

St Mary & St Peter church is the parish church at Pett, a village on the East Sussex coast, between Hastings and Rye.

There has been a place of worship on this site in Pett since 1291, and the present building was built in 1864. The earliest records of a church in Pett (the 13th century spelling was ‘Pette’ or ‘Putte’) appears in the taxation of Pop Nicholas in 1291. The present church replaced a brick and stone building of similar size, buttressed on the South side and with box pews. At a Vestry meeting held in the church in October 1863 a decision was taken to build a new church and on the 29th December 1864 the Rt Rev. A.T. Gilbert, Lord Bishop of Chichester, dedicated the new church.

The church is situated in Pett Road, 1 3/4 miles from the A 259 (Hastings to Winchelsea road). The postcode in TN35 4HE. The church is open daily from 9.00am to 5pm
