Easter Eve (Holy Saturday) - Easter Vigil and First Eucharist

Occurring
for 1 hour, 30 mins
Venue
St Mary de Haura
Address
Church Street Shoreham by Sea, BN43 5DQ, United Kingdom

Holy Saturday is the day between Good Friday and Easter Day. It is a continuation of the sorrow of Good Friday, when Christians of all traditions remember the disciples’ hopelessness in the wake of Jesus’s death on the cross; when they are unsure whether to believe that he will rise from the dead, as he said he would. However, Holy Saturday also looks forward to the knowledge of the resurrection of Jesus on Easter Day. Hallelujah!

This Easter Vigil, held often after sunset on Holy Saturday, includes the lighting of candles representing the light of Christ. In many churches congregations gather around a fire outside a darkened church, from which the Easter (Paschal) candle is lit and brought inside. This depiction of new life and light represents Jesus’s resurrection on the first Easter morning. Parishioners then light their own candles from this main candle to symbolise their own coming into new life as followers of Jesus.
All welcome...

All worship is as a family, even if perhaps it is via an online service or across the different venues. However, there is are special services where we can all be together and worship from within the same space.
Our youngest are eager to get involved and often help with the reading & the discussion after it; they often lead our prayers a little later in the service.
Even if you or you're young one isn't Baptised, please do feel free to approach and receive a Blessing or if you prefer use the moments of the Eucharist to stay seated and reflect or pray that is fine too. Quite often our choir will be singing and they sing beautifully, so simply rest in the moment and listen.

Every year St Mary’s Church holds a Christmas Tree Festival supported by Shoreham’s business, schools and community groups who sponsor and decorate Christmas Trees throughout the Church. It is a much loved part of Shoreham’s Christmas celebrations.

This year we have some brilliant supporters, and our beautiful Norman church will have a magical atmosphere filled with real Christmas trees. You will be entertained by choirs, carol singers and musicians during the weekend. Acoustics are wonderful so take some time to sit and enjoy the entertainment. On Friday evening, the church will be candlelit with Gathering Light singing and mulled wine for sale.
