Easter is the most joyful day of the year for Christians. The resurrection has come, and we have moved from darkness to light. The Easter Vigil goes through this very process, as the Church starts in darkness, and it’s empty as we begin the service outside. This is the most glorious service of the church’s year. We light the Easter fire outside, which in turn lights the Paschal Candle. As we process into church, that light begins to spread, and we sing to the candle itself. As the service continues, little by little, the light returns to the church, until the lights are switched on, the organ begins again and we sing Alleluia with great gusto! In addition we bless the font, and receive the first Communion of Easter. Afterwards we celebrate with wine and cake!
