We try to be as proactive and as diverse as possible by bringing together like-minded people, using the ideas, skills, and knowledge of young and old alike to make things happen. In 2022, we were nominated for a Stafford Borough Council Community Award.
On the first Sunday of each month, you may well see some of our members litter picking on the main roads in and out of Hixon as they strive to keep the village and its surrounding area litter free, and often alerting authorities to any fly tipping that we find. Like many similar local groups, we work closely with Stafford Borough Council’s Street-scene team, taking their help when we need it, and we regularly recycle seventy five percent of litter we collect.
We have also continued to work closely with Hixon Community Association, and help at their fantastic Chef Fest events, sharing one of their goals of sustainability and in the last two years we have successfully recycled 75 per cent of the litter we collect. We have also supported both Hixon Scout group and St. Peter’s School pupils in their litter picking efforts.
We have built our first bug house donating it to, and installing it at the end of last year on Hixon Millennium Green. Built from recycled materials and local timber with an integrated hedgehog house, we hope this will give protection and a helping hand for several years for a variety of wildlife. We intend this to be the first of many that we will erect around the village.
We are currently building a bug house for St. Peter’s Churchyard, and if anyone can think of other places to put one then please contact us.
In March, we will take part in the Great British Spring Clean, a national campaign run by Keep Britain Tidy from 15 to 31 March. Thousands of people across the UK join this event, and it would be great to see many Hixon residents join in too. Litter picking is a simple action that anyone can do to make an immediate and visible difference to their area. Of those who took part in last year’s Great British Spring Clean 85% reported that taking part made them feel more pride in their local area. And 74% said it improved their mood too!
We need to recruit more members, we are an ageing band (!) and we would love to hear from younger generations. We know how busy people are nowadays, but if you can spare just a few hours now and again we would love to hear from you. So, help your environment, help your community, become part of Hixon Green & Clean. If you are interested send an email to [email protected], find us on Facebook or ring Nigel on 01889-270903.
