With 80 displays, each measuring one metre in length, depicting scenes of the world’s largest amphibious invasion, The Longest Yarn is something quite unique and not to be missed. The scenes include the build-up to D-Day in England, the horrors on the Landing Beaches and the bloody inland battles.Created with guidance from professional historians to be accurate, each scene has been selected by the creator to depict the story of this momentous day in history. Some of the scenes depict actual WW2 veterans that were in the theatre of war in Normandy on 6th June plus the lesser-known events in local towns and villages in Normandy.180 knitters from across the world, including the UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, France and even people with NATO stationed in Europe, have joined in to help make this project happen. There is no charge for entry but donations are invited. Suggested donation £5pp. Tickets are not needed. Following the news of the death of our Sovereign, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, our heartfelt condolences go out to all members of the Royal Family. Many will want to express tribute to her extraordinary life as one who has touched the lives of countless people and who has united people in life as now in death.Opportunities for personal prayer and condolence as well as corporate commemorative events will be announced in preparation for the state funeral.
It's with sadness we receive the news of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, the Duke of Edinburgh, at the age of 99, following decades of public service. At Stoke Minster our prayers are with Her Majesty the Queen and the Royal Family at this difficult time. In the midst of the pandemic, we're not expecting to open the church for private prayer at this time, as we would seek to do in other circumstances. It's still possible to light a candle online as we reflect and give thanks. You may wish also to contribute to the Church of England's online book of condolence.
