Walkingham Hill Benefice - Parishes of Arkendale, Copgrove, Farnham, Staveley & Scotton - North Yorkshire
Welcome to the United Benefice of Walkingham Hill – St Bartholomew Arkendale, St Michael & All Angels Copgrove, St Oswald Farnham, All Saints Staveley, and St Thomas Scotton.
Why is it called Walkingham Hill? When the five parishes came together as a benefice, we sought a name that was both unifying and concise. After extensive research in the archives, we discovered that Walkingham Hill, a settlement recorded in the Domesday Book, is centrally located among the villages. As it is not tied to any specific parish or denomination, it was chosen to represent the benefice.
Nearby Walkingham Hill stood Walkingham Hall, a grand twelfth-century manor. Hargrove wrote of the hall’s approach, which was flanked by an avenue of “two rows of aged oaks.” This inspired our logo, featuring the acorns of the five parishes and a mighty oak at the center, symbolising unity, growth, and strength.
