Big Butterfly Count in the churchyard

Occurring
for 1 hour
Venue
St. Oswald's Church, Methley
Address
Churchside Methley Leeds/Wakefield, LS26 9BJ, United Kingdom

We will be organising as count in the churchyard in August. Please come along and pick a spot for 15 minutes. We will provide an identifier to record what you see.
The Big Butterfly Count is an annual UK-wide citizen science initiative organized by Butterfly Conservation. It invites people of all ages to spend just 15 minutes in a sunny spot—whether in a garden, park, or countryside—counting and recording the butterflies and day-flying moths they see. The 2025 count is scheduled from Friday, 18 July to Sunday, 10 August .

Why It Matters

Butterflies are sensitive indicators of environmental health. Tracking their populations helps scientists monitor the impacts of climate change, habitat loss, and pesticide use. Unfortunately, the 2024 count revealed the lowest average number of butterflies per 15-minute count since the survey began in 2010, with significant declines in species like the Common Blue and Small Tortoiseshell .

How to Take Part
1. Choose a sunny spot: This could be your garden, a local park, or any green space.
2. Spend 15 minutes: Observe and count the butterflies and day-flying moths you see.
3. Record your sightings: Use the Big Butterfly Count website or the free app to identify species and submit your data.

Even if you don’t see any butterflies, submitting a zero count is valuable—it provides important information about species distribution.

Get Involved

Participation is easy and contributes to vital conservation efforts. For more information, identification charts, and to submit your counts, visit the official Big Butterfly Count website.

By taking part, you’re helping scientists understand how butterflies are faring across the UK and what needs to be done to protect them.
