Names of God

There are many names for God, depending on our situation when we call on him. Here are ten of the most well known. The English and Hebrew are not exact translations of each other, but they evoke the same spirit. The title for each section is taken from the Tree of Life. Either the English or the Hebrew can be used for meditation. Using the English tends to help with concentration, because we understand the meaning. Using the Hebrew tends to help us go beyond the meaning into the heart of God.

Christian meditation aims to empty the mind, so that it can be filled with God, through Jesus Christ.

Sit in a quiet place, with your spine as upright as possible.
Breathe quietly, and relax your body.
If distractions come notice them in a passive way, and let them go.

Quietly say the name of God.

IN THE BEGINNING
I Am YAWEH

UNDERSTANDING
Wonderful Counsellor ELOHIM

MERCY
Father ABBA

SEVERITY
Mighty God ELOHIM GIBOR

BEAUTY
Come, Lord Jesus MARANATHA

ETERNITY
Everlasting Father YOD HEH, VAV HEH, ADONAI
For his faithfulness is from everlasting to everlasting. Psalm 103 v 17

SPLENDOUR
Servant King ELOHIM ADONAI
God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. John 3 v 16

FOUNDATION
Mighty Saviour MESSIAH, ADONAI
Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again. Affirmation in Holy Communion

KINGDOM
Prince of Peace EMMANUEL
