Mullion: St Mellanus

St. Mellanus Church is the Parish Church of Mullion and situated in the centre of the village.  Mullion is the largest village on Lizard Peninsula in South Cornwall and is a seaside/fishing location that welcomes all visitors.

The church is an ancient Grade 1 listed church with some parts dating back to the 13th century.   One of the many interesting features are the old oak pews (16th Century) with beautiful carvings, some depicting symbols of the Passion, others including representations of the crucifixion.  On the South door at the bottom there is a smaller door, so called the 'Dog Door' to allow the farmers' sheep dogs to leave!   The Church is dedicated to St. Mellanus, who was bishop of Rennes (Capital of Brittany) and died in the mid-sixth century.  There is a portable altar in the Lady Chapel (under the window) used either by St. Mellanus or a Catholic priest during the 16th and 17th Centuries.

We are members of the Celtic Quiet Places scheme, so please do come and enjoy the tranquility of our church.  There are Celtic Quiet Place passports, stickers and a prayer card available for a very small charge.  These may be found at the back of the church, just as you go in on the left hand side.  There are also greetings cards for sale adjacent to the font.
