There has been a Church on this site since at least the Domesday survey of 1086. The earliest part of the present building, the Vestry, dates from about 1220, the main shell of the Chancel was built at the same time and was enlarged with new windows added in the early 1300s.
The main body of the Church, the Nave, aisles and porches were built around 1420, although the buttresses of the north aisle appear to date from the 1300s, suggesting that earlier work had been reused. The Tower is roughly contemporary of the Nave but was refaced and altered in part in 1864.
The Church is regarded by many as one of the most beautiful in Suffolk, a County renowned for its many ancient churches. It is large at 168 ft long by 65 ft wide, an indication of the wealth of Mildenhall in medieval times when the wool trade made Suffolk the industrial centre of England.
Features of interest include the North Porch, West End and Lower Tower (where the font dating back to the 1400s is situated), the Tower, the Angel Roof (one of the finest Angel Roofs in the country), the Organ and the Churchyard.
The official guide to St. Mary's Church is available at the rear of the Church and we are open most days to visitors.
