Facilities and features

Accessibility

Male and female toilets are available in the community centre below the church. There is no stair-free access between the two levels.

Baby changing facilities may be found in the church toilets.

There is very limited car parking available on the level with the church door and this is reserved for those displaying a disabled person's sticker or EU blue badge. If you need to drive to church you should arrive early and either use the marked spaces in Promenadengasse (including the little car park on Sunday mornings only) or the car park at Parkhaus Hohe Promenade. We encourage people to arrive by walking, cycling or public transport.

A defibrillator is available in the choir changing area by the kitchen on the lower level.

Accessible (ramped) access to the church door can only be made by using the pathways alongside Hohe Promenade/ Rämistrasse (quite steep but short) or by the French church (better - less steep but a bit longer). Access to the Community Centre is from Promenadengasse. The Church and the Community Centre are connected internally by only a steep staircase.

St Andrew's has a modern loudspeaker system which includes a hearing loop for hearing aids that use a T setting. If you are fortunate to use a modern digital hearing aid you will be able to hear from the loudspeakers direct. If you have difficulty in hearing the service please make this known to an usher.

Large print hymn books are available on request to an usher.

Well behaved dogs, including assistance dogs, are welcome in our church.

If you need to receive gluten free wafers during communion this is possible. Bring your own wafers and give them to the priest before the service. These will be blessed with all the others during communion and given to you at communion.

Our Building

Most windows in the church are fitted with stained glass. The green Graham Sutherland window is located above the font: Graham Sutherland belongs together with Ben Nicholson and Henry Moore to a group of artists who have not only reconstituted a modern school of art in Britain, but have also created a considerable impact on the world of art at large. Mr. Sutherland is the artist responsible for the controversial portraits of Somerset Maugham and Winston Churchill and also for the magnificent tapestry in Coventry Cathedral. The window in St. Andrew's Church is his first work in the medium of stained glass, and is therefore unique. The theme of this window has been developed from the light of the sun into that of the Passion Flower, which contains symbolically the Thorns, the Nails, and the Hammer, connected with the Crucifixion, and yet at the same time is like the sun the symbol of Life. The background is formed of huge leaves, blue against intense greens, blues, and yellows, and it is on this mysterious background that the Passion Flower is superimposed. The flow of water depicted in the lower half of the window symbolizes
the Fountain of Life, whilst in the centre the Crucifixion of Christ represents His sacrifice for mankind. The artist in creating this window for St. Andrew's has achieved an harmonious design which is neither completely naturalistic nor totally abstract, but which nevertheless provides an ,arresting visual link between the modern glass and aluminium
of the main entrance - and indeed of the adjoining new buildings of the Tochterschule - and the more classical architecture of the Nave and Chancel. The window was made by Mr. Paul Bony of Paris, to whose craftsmanship any famous French and other artists have entrusted their designs to execute in stained glass.

We have registered as an Eco Church and have been awarded our Bronze Award.
