Our observance of Christingle (with a collection for the Childrens' Society) also includes a simple celebration of the eucharist and the giving of holy communion. This is the first of our Christmas services, technically a vigil mass of Christmas. We are after 12 noon on Christmas Eve, so the feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ has now begun.

Midnight Mass & Blessing of the Crib

At the heart of our Christmas worship is our gathering in church for Midnight Mass and the Blessing of the Crib. The gospels lead us to think that Jesus was born at night and from very early on in the history of the Church on this night the eucharist was celebrated in the middle of the night. So we do today.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament

For half an hour the sacrament is exposed upon the altar in one of our side chapels as a focus for prayer and meditation. There is spoken prayer to begin and end but most of the time is spend in silence. Our 10am Thursday mass follows.

As well as publicly and corporately praying the Stations of the Cross on each Friday in Lent we have now restored our pre-COVID observance of doing so once a month, on the second Friday, during the rest of the year. We follow with an additional mass at around 8pm. In the Stations we trace the path of Jesus from condemnation by Pilate to his burial in prayer and meditation.
