Please join us for a special service of Holy Communion at 11.00 AM on 25th of May 2025 to mark the anniversary of the Restoration in 1660 and to honour the memory of Richard Penderel, ‘The Kings Deliverer’, who is buried and memorialised in St Giles Churchyard.
After defeat at The Battle of Worcester in May of 1651, Penderel helped King Charles II to evade capture by hiding him in the boughs of the Royal Oak in Boscobel Woods in Shropshire. After the Restoration in 1660 the anniversary of the King's escape and deliverance, the ‘Royal Miracle’ as it was termed, was made the focus of a ‘perpetual commemoration’ by Act of Parliament.
During Holy Communion a sermon will be given on the theme of Church and Crown and following the service Richard Penderel’s tomb and memorial stone will be garlanded with Oak leaves.
