I don’t know if you have seen the BBC series that examines the “Provenance” and attribution of ownership to disputed artworks.

Fiona Bruce and Philip Mould along with specialist research being carried out by Brender Grosvenor carry out Forensic analysis and archive searches are carried out by various Fine Art specialist. Documenting paintings and records related to one particular artist, looking at the materials used to see that they are time appropriate, Colours and methods used, looking for unique styles and quirks of the artist. To confirm that each new work found is the produce of its creator.

The place of origin or earliest history of something’
