Lent is a time when we prepare for Easter – We can celebrate the new life and resurrection of Easter Day better when we have spent time understanding why Jesus suffered and died for us, which we do during Lent.
The "imposition of ashes" can help with this... as the season of Lent begins we are reminded that God is gracious and merciful to those who call on Him with repentant hearts. It is a simple act; as a sign of our penitence and a symbol of our mortality, the vicar draws a cross in ashes on the forehead of each congregation member, speaking the words:
"Remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return. Turn away from sin and be faithful to Christ"
There is no requirement to take part in this; you can just observe. We then share communion.
