Getting here
A warm welcome awaits you at St Mary's, Welwick. As well as our varied pattern of Sunday worship, we have Alpha and a weekly Pop In. St Mary's is at the heart of the community of the small friendly village of Welwick.
The church and village enjoy some interesting historical connections. Approaching the village from the west, the visitor cannot miss the lifesize plus sculpture depicting Gunpowder Plotters. John and Christopher Wright of Ploughlands, Welwick, went to school with Guy Fawkes and went on to assist him in his infamous London adventure, which may have been planned at Plotters' Barn, Ploughlands Farm. John and Christopher's niece, Mary Ward, left a much happier legacy: she founded an educational order of nuns which continues today, linking St Mary's with the Bar Convent in York.
St Mary's is currently on English Heritage's at risk register: a major restoration will soon be underway. The church is open daily. Features include a spectacular tomb, attributed to the same workshop as the Percy Tomb in Beverley Minster and a brass dated 1621, to another member of the Wright family.
