This month Christine Gillespie, in writing the Dear Friends article, reminds us of those people who work behind the scenes to allow the Church to thrive. There is also a report from Pat Jarvis on the St Wilfrid‘s Spring Fair, which took place on a gloriously sunny Saturday afternoon in May. In attendance in Church were Martin Pearson and Helen Brown, who entertained the fairgoers with a drama piece, called Two Old Birds!Elsewhere I lament the impending loss of the old sound system St Wilfrid’s. No more Sunday morning snoozes for me!
During the Spring Fair we were royally entertained by Two Masked Thespians!Helen Brown and Martin Pearson read an entertaining, and imagined, dialogue between two of the carved stone heads that adorn the Church south door. They recalled how many Spring and other Church Fairs they had enjoyed over the years. Naturally, since these particular birds were carved during the construction of that part of the Church they have seen many, many, Fairs!Attached is a video file of the performance along with a written dialogue.
This month I feel a change in the air. Philip MacDonald is due to retire this year, and has written his last Dear Friends article. Have a long and happy retirement Philip, and thank you for your contributions and support - both have been most welcome. It is also six years since I agreed to be the editor of Connected; I always thought that I would do this for five years maximum, and yet here I am...And of course we welcome King Charles III formally this month. Also in Connected this month, Brayton WI samples wine with John Butterwick; the exact details of the event seem somewhat sketchy - Jean was unsure if 25 people sampled 4 bottles, or 4 people sampled 25 bottles. But either way they enjoyed the afternoon.St Wilfrid’s looks forward to its Spring Fair and we report on another great recital at the church organ by the very talented Matthew Collins.
This month Revd. Roy Shaw takes us along the Camino de Santiago, (the Way of St James) in northern Spain. This undertaking is not for the faint-hearted!Jill Clarke reports on the Mothers’ Union meeting in which Dan Thomas, curate, described his experiences at Selby Abbey. There is also an overview of Passion Week, 2nd to 9th September, that I copied from Parish Pump (Bless them!) and an apology to the St Francis Gentle Movement ladies who slipped into my Spam Folder in December.Hilary Putman tells of the Walk For International Women’s Day that took place on 8th March. Finally, and disappointingly, there has not been a sighting of Bodgit & Scarper this month...
