Eco Church

Marton Church lends itself to being an eco-friendly place.
We achieved a Bronze Award as an Eco Friendly Church in 2023 and  the Silver Award in early 2024. ecochurch.arocha.org.uk.

Our churchyard is being restored as a wildflower meadow, and we welcome wildlife by sympathetic stewardship of our outdoor spaces, including a seasonal pond, limited grass cutting (annual scything by hand) and a bird feeding station. We have a composting toilet and our electricity provider is 'green'. We do have to use gas heaters in winter, but are exploring alternative heating ideas in 2024.

Inside the church we try not to introduce any new plastic, although this is sometimes a challenge - our new hymn books would be damp if they weren't stored in plastic boxes but we have repurposed old containers rather than buying new ones. We try to use recycled paper and compostable materials whenever possible. We have recently set up a Marton & Moxby Parish Food Pantry (linked with the 'I am Reusable Food Bank in York) to prevent food waste (donating items we do not need).

We are registered as a Fairtrade Place of Worship so our tea, coffee and sugar are bought from companies that support local communities through fair trading. In January 2023 we circulated an eco-questionnaire and a copy of the findings is attached below. The purpose of this was to encourage each other by sharing different ways to make good and ethical lifestyle choices. We regularly add to these ideas in our weekly Marton Friends newsletter.
