On Thursday 8th June 2023, as part of Love Your Burial Ground Week, a group of folk met to undertake a simple wildlife survey.
They used identification guides supplied by the organisation Caring for God's Acre, who promote the idea that burial grounds and churchyards are important locations for British wildlife as they are pretty much undisturbed ground.
As well as the paper guides we also used the iNaturalist app to take photographs of what we saw. The app (when it had signal!) helped to identify what it was we were looking at and meant we could add our findings to a National survey. Anything that we couldn't recognise was also then open to other app users to suggest names for.
A lovely couple of hours in the sunshine was enjoyed by the group.
This is not the end of the survey as those who came can add observations in the future and at different times of day, and anyone wishing to have a go is welcome to pick up the identification guides and recording forms in church, or us the iNaturalist app, and enjoy the beautiful churchyard and its wildlife.
