A Nine Lessons and Advent Carols service is a traditional liturgical celebration that prepares for the coming of Christ at Christmas, blending Scripture readings (lessons) with Advent carols and hymns. It draws inspiration from the famous "Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols" originated in 1880 by Bishop Edward White Benson, though the Advent version shifts its focus to anticipation and prophecy.
The service begins in darkness, symbolizing the world's waiting for the Messiah, and unfolds with the lighting of candles as a sign of Christ's light breaking into the world. The nine lessons trace the scriptural narrative of salvation, from Old Testament prophecies of the Messiah to the foretelling of John the Baptist and the Annunciation to Mary.
The carols will be interspersed with readings will reflective of Advent themes, such as waiting, hope, and the promise of redemption, fostering a meditative yet joyful atmosphere that sets the spiritual tone for the season.
If you haven't experienced one before do come along and immerse yourself in the spirit of Advent this year.
