The turret clock was made by Smith of Derby in 1907 and was originally wound by hand three times a week. In 1994 two automatic winding motors were installed by Smith of Derby (one for the movement and one for the hour striking). These are now well-beyond their life expectancy and have been breaking down with increasing frequency. The most recent failure has proven fatal and, despite recent visits from the engineer, cannot be fixed. Unfortunately the company that made the motors went out of business some years ago and parts are no longer available.
The Parochial Church Council is keen to see the public clock working again as soon as possible and has procured a quotation from Smith of Derby for replacing the automatic winding with the latest system. This uses lighter weights and better gearing to put less strain on the original clock mechanism to which it would be attached. In order to do this we need permission from the Diocese of Winchester (for which we have applied) and the “small matter” of £5,866.80
This is a large sum for a modest congregation and any help towards reaching this target would be greatly appreciated. We are hoping that the clock may be working again by Easter.
