History of Holy Trinity Church
Holy Trinity is Saxon in origin, and one of the earliest documented churches in Hampshire first mentioned in 901. The Domesday Book records the church as belonging to the Bishop of Winchester.
The church was enlarged between 1150 - 1225 to include the present nave and chancel.
In 1520 the tower was added. In 1714 fire destroyed the roof which was rebuilt. A further fire in 1908 destroyed the chancel roof, together with part of the nave roof, the altar, communion table and many internal objects.
The following year the church was extensively restored, the vestry was added, new stained glass windows installed and a new organ built.
In 1920 the war memorial was erected.
There are notable memorials , including one to Revd Alexander Dallas, who was Rector from 1828 to 1869. He was a first cousin to George Mifflin Dallas who was Vice President of the USA from 1844 to 1849, and after whom the city of Dallas, Texas is said to be named.
