Talk of a new church started at the Wharf Inn in 1803. By 1817 after a deadlock of some 14years a meeting was held in the Bulls Head Inn, public subscription was opened to pay for the new church. The site for the church was exchanged for the land of the old chapel with Mr William and George Greenup. John Oakes was appointed as the architect. The foundation stone was laid by Mr. Thomas Dyson esq. on April 22nd, 1819.
The church was opened under licence from the Archbishop of York with the consecration 2 years later.
