For many years, the names of these heroes have been inscribed on our memorial, a poignant reminder of the price paid for our freedom. Now, thanks to ongoing research and contributions from local families, we’ve added personal stories, and service details to accompany the names of the fallen. These updates aim to bring to life the memory of those who left home to serve their country and never returned.
Remembrance Sunday Events – November 10, 2024This year, we invite the entire community to join us in commemorating Remembrance Sunday with two key events:
Act of Remembrance at Crow Wood ParkLocation: Crow Wood Park, Rochdale Rd, Sowerby Bridge, Halifax HX2 7NR
Time: 10:45 AM, for the 11:00 AM Silence
Led by: Revd. Tommy and Mrs. Anthea Gee
We will gather at Crow Wood Park for an Act of Remembrance at the War Memorial. At 11:00 AM, we will observe a two-minute silence to honour those who lost their lives in both World Wars and other conflicts. Wreaths will be laid, and prayers offered in a solemn tribute to those who served their country.
Service of Remembrance with Holy Communion at Christ ChurchLocation: Christ Church, Sowerby Bridge
Time: 4:00 PM
Later in the afternoon, we will hold a Service of Remembrance at Christ Church, which will include Holy Communion. This service provides an opportunity for further reflection and thanksgiving as we remember those from our parish who made the ultimate sacrifice. All are welcome to come and take part in this important occasion.
Bringing History to LifeThis year’s enhanced war memorial reflects our commitment to keeping the memory of these individuals alive. We encourage everyone, especially relatives and descendants, to come and discover the newly available stories and details behind the names that have graced our church for over a century.
We will continue to update these records as we receive more information, and we welcome contributions from anyone who has letters, photographs, or other historical documents related to those listed on our memorial. If you would like to contribute or learn more, please contact us.
Join us this Remembrance Sunday as we honour the past, reflect on the cost of war, and reaffirm our hope for peace.
"Lest we forget."
