Knit & Natter: Crafting, Chatting, and Caring

Community_news

Every fortnight, our church hosts the Knit & Natter gathering, a delightful blend of crafting and conversation where sometimes more chatting than knitting happens. It's a wonderful opportunity for members to come together, share stories, and for some, to learn a new craft.

Highlights from Our Latest Session

During our latest session, we welcomed a new member who successfully picked up some basic crochet stitches. She left feeling proud of her accomplishments and eager to continue learning. It was a heartwarming reminder of the supportive environment our Knit & Natter group fosters.

Meanwhile, three dedicated members were busy finishing sweaters for penguins, contributing to a unique and meaningful cause. These sweaters are temporarily placed on small penguins at Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia that have been coated in oil before they are washed. The jumpers minimize the oil intake by the penguins, as when their feathers are saturated with oil, the birds attempt to clean themselves by preening. This can lead to the ingestion of oil, which is harmful to their health. The sweaters prevent this, giving rescuers time to clean the penguins properly and rehabilitate them.

Another member was adding a border to an impressive crochet cardigan, showcasing her skills and creativity. In addition to these projects, our group proudly donated around 30 knitted squares to the Dementia Hub at AgeUK for their fiddle blankets project. These blankets provide comfort and sensory stimulation for individuals living with dementia.
