Getting here
St Mary Magdalene's is a welcoming family church. The tower is oldest part of the building, the lower part of which dates from the late 12th century, although there is some evidence to indicate that there may have been saxon church here from the 8th century. The chuch was extended substantially in two phases in 1872 and 1888 at the time when the town of Hucknall Torkard grew rapidly as the coal mines opened. Visitors are attracted from all over the world to come and see the burial place of the Poet the 6th Lord Byron, his daughter the mathematician Ada Lovelace who lie in the family vault below the Chancel and the tombstone of Ben Caunt , Boxing Champion of all England 1841-5.
St Mary Magdalene's has a wonderful family atmosphere, with a growing congregation and a variety of services each Sunday and during the week to satisfy the needs of both young and old of the parish. The church is also an oasis of calm in the middle of the town and we try whenever possible to have the building open and stewarded each morning (10am to noon) and afternoon (2pm-4pm) for those who wish to look round or just enjoy the peaceful atmosphere.
