About Us

St James' dates mainly from the 12th & early 16th century, and is situated next to parkland on the southern fringe of Sheffield. Sir Francis Chantrey is buried here, as well as the parents of the two bishops Blythe, whose alabaster tomb of c1500 is said to have inspired him to sculpture.
We are a welcoming church, with a fairly traditional worship style. We are proud to retain a choral evensong, but the centre of our worship is the Eucharist. We have a church school and the usual uniformed organisations for young people, but want to extend our outreach to all age-groups.
St James' enjoys a close relationship with the Meadowhead Christian Fellowship, who meet at "Unit 3" within the Jordanthorpe shopping centre; we share some of our weekday services with them.
The attractiveness of our church building means we are often called on to perform weddings and baptisms, but while we wish to be welcoming, we do have to conform with the law, and maintain good relationships with neighbouring parishes. Please contact the Rector by email for more details.
