On August 21st a service for commemoration took place in the Peace Garden at St Lawrence attended by the lord Lieutenant Susie Sheldon, Rev Steve Daughtery Archdeacon and led by Rev. Rob Marsh. In attendance were representatives from the British Legion and the sea cadets who provided a guard of honour and also a Royal Marine bugler to play the last post. Mrs Diana Mc Greachan whose cousin was one of the sailors who died had been looking for a memorial site to mark this tragic event 80 years ago. Working with the churchwardens there is now a dedicated bench and a plaque naming all the sailors and a Canadian Maple tree in the garden. After the service the Whitwell WI provided a light lunch.
