About Us
The Church of St Peter and St Paul, Abington (known locally as ‘The church in the park’) is located in the middle of Abington Park, Northampton. It was built over 800 years ago and was built as a place of worship for the inhabitants of the manor house and the estate workers and their families.
The manor house is now Abington Museum and the church remains a place of worship for the local area. The families who once owned the manor house are commemorated in the church e.g. Sir John Bernard and his wife Elizabeth Nash (who was Shakespeare’s granddaughter) and William Thursby who was a barrister and an M.P. for Northampton. The carved wooden pulpit is believed to have come from the workshop of Grinling Gibbons and the window in the Lady Chapel is the work of John Piper.
The style of worship at the church is in the catholic tradition and offers a variety of services. There is a very active choir which is affiliated to the RSCM and sings at the 10 am Eucharist each week and at 6 pm Evensong once a month. A team of ringers ring the six bells before the main Sunday service. Fairtrade coffee/tea is offered after the main service. The church has complete disabled access including a lavatory and baby changing facilities and a hearing loop.
We have a children’s worker who organises a Sunday School (3 – 10 yrs) which takes place during the main service on a Sunday as well as a Tots and Teddies group (0 – 5yrs) which meets Tuesday mornings during term time in the church rooms. School visits are arranged to the church during the year. There is also a very active Girlguiding group. A youth drop-in centre for young people aged from 11 to 18, called Abington House of Fun, is located in Abington Park, and is also supported by volunteers from the church.
Midweek services include , Zoom Compline (Tuesday) Weekday Worship (Thursday) which take place at the church. St Christopher's home (a home for the elderly with both independent and assisted living) hosts Communion Service every Friday at 10.30 am at the chapel where the Clergy from Deanery lead the service.
