Music and Worship

Our tower is home to no less than 17 bells, 8 hung for full circle ringing and a further 9 hung 'dead'. All 17 can be rung from a carillon. Our tower captain is always happy to show folk around and welcome new members to the ringing team.

Js & Bs is become a well known destination for some of the finest music in Newcastle ranging from our annual Jazz concert series, Saturday Classics and contemporary evening concerts throughout the year. Find out more at https://www.jamesbasilfenham.org.uk/music/welcome/

The organ was built by J.W. Walker & Sons of London and is considered to be one of the finest in Newcastle. The three manual movable console is connected to both the main organ and the celestial organ creating a unique sound of the instrument 'speaking' from different parts of the building. If you look up at the north wall and above the memorial chapel you will see the beautifully carved screens which hide the main part of the organ and until about forty years ago the organ console itself. The screens look Moorish in taste, but the designs are not Islamic and are almost certainly entirely executed by George Jack and carved by Lawrence Tumer, again a well-lnown craftsman in his day. The Organ was completely resorted and renovated by Woods of Huddersfield in 2018.
