Hexham Abbey

Hexham Abbey is one of the oldest sites of Christian worship in the country and was founded by St. Wilfrid as a Benedictine Abbey in AD 674. It later became an Augustinian Priory and is now the Parish Church of Hexham and we would love to welcome you to this wonderful building but, more importantly, to the lively and active community that today worships and serves God in this place.

Hexham Abbey is a busy and bustling church. We have a large number of services each week and aim to cope for a wide range of needs and styles. The Abbey has a wonderful musical tradition and choral music plays a huge part in our worshipping life. We also hold more reflective and informal services which draw on Celtic and Taize traditions and, hopefully, help people to find refreshment and healing.

The Abbey is committed to working with families and young people. Our choirs offer a wonderful opportunity for children to sing and Tots' Praise and Messy Church are great places for families to meet, socialise and worship. There are also many groups for adults including Homegroups, a Christian Meditation Group and a Poetry Group to name but a few.

Hospitality was always at the heart of Monastic life and we are determined to keep this tradition going! We have a wonderful cafe at the Abbey and refreshments are offered after our main Sunday service. The Abbey also has a wonderful suite of rooms which can be hired for weddings, birthdays or numerous other events and a great team which will help you to organise things.

We would love to welcome you to the Abbey, be it as a visitor to this amazing heritage site or someone seeking to find God's deep blessing amongst this Christian community.
