The Newcastle Trafalgar Day service, hosted by the Lord Mayor’s office, will take place at Newcastle Cathedral.
During the service, prayers will be offered, and wreaths will be laid at the memorial for local and national hero Admiral Lord Collingwood. Following this, many attendees will proceed to the Collingwood Monument in Tynemouth for the annual ‘Toast to the Admiral’.
Vice Admiral Collingwood assumed command and secured victory on the fateful day when his friend, Lord Admiral Nelson, was mortally wounded aboard HMS Victory. Under Collingwood’s leadership, even the most severely damaged British ships triumphed in that tempestuous battle in 1805.
