Hymns & Music for 1st August 2021 recorded by Mel, St. Paul's Church Organist
Mel, St. Paul's Church Organist, writes:
There are two newly recorded items among this week's hymns and I'm again grateful to friends at Bury Parish Church for permission to use their splendid organ and building. The lectionary readings mention manna in the wilderness and the hymns make reference to our "manna" today that we receive in communion. The closing hymn is a familiar tune, 'Duke Street', often used with the words "Fight the good fight". Here it gets words by the Scottish Jesuit Fr. James Quinn, born in 1919 and who was active in the 1960s drive to achieve congregational singing in R. C. churches. It was that same Vatican II initiative that in 1970 gave this young Anglican their first resident organist role in an RC church and I am grateful for the easy two way traffic in music between them and Anglican churches.
