About Us

St Luke's was founded before 1552 as a chantry chapel for the Heywood family. Robert Heywood rebuilt the chapel in 1640, but the fast pace of growth in Heywood as a cotton town during the 19th century meant that the chapel was too small, so in 1859 it was pulled down and replaced by the vast present structure, which was consecrated in October 1862 following a very successful public subscription appeal.

Today, St Luke's is a central landmark in Heywood, and can be seen for miles around. It is a built, living testament to God's glory, and has a dedicated and friendly congregation who are delighted to welcome new faces and old friends. As Jesus taught us, we serve our local community as best we can, both in a spiritual and a physical sense. See our Services and events page for more details.

We are a Church of England (Anglican) Church within the Diocese of Manchester, the Deanery of Rochdale, and the Heywood Mission Community. We are active members of Churches Together in Heywood, which unites all major Christian denominations in the love of God and service to our communities.
