Maundy Thursday takes its name from the Latin word ‘mandatum’ – the new commandment which Jesus gave to his disciples on the night of his betrayal: the command that they should love one another. Keeping his last supper with his disciples, Jesus demonstrated this in two ways: by washing the feet of his disciples and by instituting the Eucharist, in which he gave himself to them and also to all of us.
