Maundy Thursday gets its name from the Latin word 'mandare', from which we get the word 'command'. Christians remember Jesus's command: "Love one another as I have loved you." This is the day when Christians remember Jesus sharing the Last Supper with his disciples before his death on Good Friday. In our service the feet of 12 people will be washed as Jesus washed his disciples' feet.
At the end of the service the sanctuary is stripped of all colour in preparation for Good Friday. The service ends with the sacrament being carried to the chapel which marks the beginning of the Watch of Prayer until midnight.
