St Mary’s Eco Group are organising a Quiz to boost the funds for the various works needed to keep the Oak Lane Cemetery in good repair. The monies raised will enable us to repair the footpaths, paint the railings and keep those pesky brambles in order.

Oak Lane Cemetery was an overflow cemetery for St Mary’s Church in the early 1800’s and where you will find military contemporaries of Nelson and Wellington including Field Marshal Sir Edward Blakeney who after a distinguished military career under Wellington went on to be the Governor of the Royal Hospital at Chelsea.

The cemetery is now looked after by volunteers, The St Mary’s Eco Group, and the funds we raise enable us to keep on top of the preservation work.

Our fund raisers help us to have graves maintained and repaired, keep the paths clear and manage the very active vegetation. We have in the past repaired the gates and created an information panel explaining the significance of the cemetery with its abundant wildlife and famous inhabitants. It is a place for all to enjoy and breathe a little bit of fresh air in this hectic world.
