St Mary’s has always been a place blessed with good music enriching the church’s worship. Our Choral Scholarships offer the opportunity to young singers to hone their skills in performance, sight reading, solo and choral work, while supporting the congregation in their singing. Many previous scholars have used their time at St Mary's as a springboard moving on to roles St Martin in the Fields, Trinity College Cambridge, Guildford Cathedral and elsewhere. We are currently recruiting four singers (SATB) for the academic year 2024 – 25.

Here are five reasons you should come to sing with us:

1. We are a friendly, inclusive and liberal congregation with a strong and varied musical heritage.

2. The role is varied and flexible singing in a 4-part consort, boosting a voluntary choir, and leading the service as a cantor/soloist.

3. The commitment is flexible: 2 – 3 Sundays per month plus opportunities for additional work. No midweek rehearsals

4. Free use of the church as a rehearsal and/recital space.

6. ‘Per-service’ fee of £62 or £78 for longer ‘special’ services – eg Carol Services.

Scholars need not be committed Christians but they should be willing to join in the community life of the church to some degree.
