About Us
St George’s is a Grade 2 listed church building, consecrated in 1781, serving an important role in the community as the industrial population of Wigan grew in the 19th and early 20th centuries. In the 1960s the decline of Wigan’s large industries, the large scale redevelopment of the town that replaced old housing with new commercial buildings, and a new road system had a dramatic effect on the church as families moved away. Nevertheless a small yet faithful congregation ensured that St George’s ran as a parish church until 2018.
In November 2018 the church offered vital service to the common good by hosting a Night Shelter, and has since then developed into the home of The Brick, an innovative local grass roots charity that works to overcome the affliction of poverty. The Brick offers services to people at risk of or transitioning through homelessness, financial hardship or crisis, and St George’s acts as both the homebase of the charity as well as its food centre.
Church Wigan and the Parish of Wigan Town Centre are proud to work with The Brick.
