St. Cuthbert's

St. Cuthbert's is a friendly and inclusive church in the liberal-catholic tradition of the Church of England. Our services are focussed on sharing bread and wine in the Eucharist (Communion), which we celebrate together at 9.30 am every Sunday, using the Book of Common Prayer and Common Worship alternately. We extend a warm welcome to everyone seeking to encounter God.

The Eucharist remains firmly at the heart of our services, following the instruction of Jesus. On the night before his death, he shared a meal with his disciples in which he blessed bread and wine and gave it to them, saying this is my body and blood, do this in remembrance of me. In the very early church, the followers of Jesus met together to share bread and wine, as Jesus had commanded. Within a short time, this practice had become formalised, establishing the shape of "liturgy" that we would recognise today. Thus, when we meet to celebrate the Eucharist, we participate in a form of worship that has changed little over the centuries.

Christians have long believed that when bread and wine is blessed in the Eucharist, it is changed in a way that means Jesus is present within it. Something mysterious and holy has taken place that brings us closer to Jesus. The Eucharist is therefore both a reverential and also joyful occasion, in which our relationship with Jesus is nourished. As we share in the one bread and one cup, so our relationship with each other is also strengthened and we build community.

If you would like to experience the beauty of liturgical worship in the stunning setting of a medieval parish church you will be made very welcome. Come and join with us, and in fellowship with generations of Christians who have gone before us, as we gather around Christ’s table.

At St Cuthbert's we are all committed to the safeguarding of children, young people and adults. We follow the House of Bishops guidance and policies and have our own Parish Safeguarding Officer - Mrs Tara Kenyon. She can be contacted via email at [email protected] The Diocese of Liverpool’s safeguarding pages contain vital links and information including contacts for the Diocesan Safeguarding Advisor (DSA) who advise our PSOs. If you are concerned that a child or adult has been harmed or may be at risk of harm please contact the DSA. If you have immediate concerns about the safety of someone, please contact the police and your local authority Children or Adults Services.
